According to Global Industry Analysts, Inc. the world market for cubic boron nitride (CBN)abrasives will reach US $194 m by 2012. That represents an annual average growth rate of 3.6% over a four year period to 2012.

In its latest report, “Cubic Boron Nitride Abrasives: A Global Strategic Business Report,” the Asia-Pacific region represents the largest market for CBN. In the report period this region is forecast to growth by 5.2% annually on average, with Japan representing the major market with a value of more than US $42 m.

The report has analysed data related to sales values from the major geographic regions and includes countries such as the US, Canada, France, Germany, UK, Italy, Spain, Russia, plus regions like Asia-Pacific (ex.Japan), Latin America, Middle East and the Rest of the World. The report looks at end user segments such as Automotive, Aerospace, Bearings, Tools and Dies, and gears.

CBN is gaining ground in most grinding operations. Its popularity stems from the fact that it offers regular geometries, improved integrity on polished surfaces and decreased cycle times. Though CBN has been around for more than 40 years, it has taken a considerable time to become established. As a superabrasive, potential users have been deterred from adopting the material because of general reluctance to embrace a new materials coupled with the relatively high price of CBN. Now those attitudes are changing and the general improvement as CBN wheel materials deliver increased efficiencies, increased machine uptime and shortened grinding times.

Automotive manufacturers are particularly keen on CBN, switching to CBN from traditional wheel materials. This industry is also the large CBN user accounting for more than 27% of the global demand and its growth will be an average annual rate of 4.3% over the four year report period.

Key players in this market are 3M Company, Asahi Diamond Industrial Co. Ltd., Carborundum Universal Ltd., ClappDiCo Corporation, Element Six, Noritake Co, Ltd, Saint Gobain Abrasives Inc. Tyrolit Group and Washington Mills Hennepin, Inc.
